Large-Capacity Syringes: Features and Selection Criteria

siringhe di grande capacità

Large-capacity syringes are used in procedures that involve handling larger volumes of fluid than those typically managed with smaller syringes. In these cases, device selection should take into account not only nominal capacity, but also design characteristics, graduation accuracy and the type of connection.

Operational requirements may vary depending on the volume to be handled, the substance being used and the method of connection to other devices.

The Numantec Group’s range of large-capacity syringes includes different sizes and configurations, developed to meet a variety of application requirements.

Choosing Large-Capacity Syringes: Key Considerations

Capacity is the first factor to consider. The availability of syringes in different volumes makes it possible to select the size best suited to the amount of fluid to be handled, while taking into account the specific requirements of the procedure.

Beyond volume, other technical and functional features also need to be taken into account.

Connection Type

The tip configuration determines how the syringe connects to other components and its compatibility with the devices used during the procedure. The main options include:

  • eccentric Luer tip: features an off-centre connection, making sample collection easier for the operator;
  • Luer Lock: uses a threaded locking mechanism to provide a secure and reliable connection;
  • catheter tip: allows connection to tubing, meeting different operational requirements from those associated with Luer connections.

The choice should be based on the intended use of the syringe and the type of connection required for the procedure.

Materials and Design Features

The syringe’s construction also plays an important role in its performance. A transparent barrel makes it easier to inspect the contents, while a graduated scale allows the volume to be read during use.

The plunger sealing system is another factor to consider, together with the plunger design and the materials used in the syringe’s construction.

Numantec Large-Capacity Syringes: Sizes and Configurations

The Numantec range includes 30, 50/60 and 100 ml syringes with different connection types, providing a choice of configurations to suit different volumes and procedural requirements.

Available options include:

  • 30 ml: available with an eccentric Luer tip or Luer Lock connection;
  • 50 ml: available in an amber version with a Luer Lock connection, designed to protect light-sensitive medications;
  • 60 ml: available with an eccentric Luer tip, Luer Lock connection or catheter tip;
  • 100 ml: available with a catheter tip and a removable Luer adapter housed within the plunger rod.

This latter configuration provides greater flexibility in connecting the syringe, thanks to the dedicated adapter.

The Numantec Group syringes feature a transparent polypropylene barrel with a plunger retention ring and an opaque polypropylene plunger rod. The plunger stopper is made of non-toxic synthetic rubber and features two sealing rings, while medical-grade silicone is used for lubrication.

The graduated scale complies with EN ISO 7886-1. The devices are packaged in blister packs made of medical-grade paper and plastic film and sterilised using ethylene oxide in a cycle validated in accordance with EN ISO 11135.

The availability of different capacities and connection types makes it possible to select the model best suited to the specific requirements of the procedure, rather than relying on a single configuration for different operational needs.

In this way, the Numantec Group provides healthcare professionals with a range of large-capacity syringes combining multiple sizes, different connection systems and well-defined design features, supporting appropriate device selection according to specific requirements for use.
